Rochester & Erie on Track for Second Year of Record Carload Growth
Rochester, IN – The Rochester & Erie Railway, LLC (RER) is poised for a remarkable second year of record carload growth, following its selection as the new operator of the Fulton County Railroad (FC) in April 2023. Since taking over operations, RER has implemented significant improvements that have transformed service delivery and operational efficiency.
Upon assuming control, the four owners of RER, who also serve as operators, wasted no time in enhancing service frequency from two days a week to a five-day-a-week schedule. This strategic move has not only met the demands of existing customers but has also attracted new business, leading to a substantial increase in carload volume.
In addition to improving service frequency, RER has embarked on two major INDOT grant projects aimed at enhancing safety and reliability. The first phase involved the installation of over 5,000 ties across six miles of track, completed within the first nine months of operations. Currently, a third INDOT grant project is underway, which will see the installation of an additional 2,500+ ties over four more miles.
RER’s commitment to customer service is further exemplified by its collaboration with Rochester Iron & Metal. The railway constructed an additional industry track equipped with a rail scale and an extra switch, facilitating access to the facility from both ends. This enhancement has streamlined operations and improved loading efficiency for one of RER’s key customers.
A crucial factor in RER’s success has been its partnership with Norfolk Southern, which provides daily interchange service in Argos, IN. This collaboration ensures that most carloads move the same day to Fort Wayne, IN, after being pulled from industry. The high car velocity and minimal dwell times have further optimized operations, allowing RER to efficiently manage the flow of empty and loaded cars.
Looking ahead, RER remains dedicated to enhancing the customer experience and expanding rail service to additional industries in North Central Indiana, regardless of their proximity to existing rail lines. With a focus on continuous improvement and customer satisfaction, Rochester & Erie Railway is set to maintain its trajectory of growth and success in the coming years.
